Yes, it's that time of year again. The time of year when the coffee makers get pulled from the cabinets, sweaters are pulled from the closet, and writers polish their novels - it's novel contest season!
For the last three weekends, I have been polishing Enkindu. I know I have an editor, but I have found editors don't always find everything: like that play on words that only the author can achieve.
I have found a few missing words and even one misused word, but all is better now. This is my last weekend of editing, and I'll be sending out Enkindu as it stands. With fingers crossed, I'll be waiting to see the results.
If you have never entered a contest like this before. It's maddening waiting for the response, willing that email to arrive, all in the hopes of passing into the next round of judging. Then, it starts all over again. It's definitely a love-hate relationship. However, in the end, it's rewarding to be awarded for all your hard work. Not that fans are not rewarding, because I do love the gang! This is different. This is a competition of my peers. A marker in my life. You remember being measured as a child … your parents stand you against door jamb, and mark your growth each year. Well, this is my growth mark for this year.
I feel as though I have grown as an author, reader and reviewer, but these contests confirm it, at least for the author part. Contests, for me, make it real.
Plus, it’s just plain cool to win! So, watch the blog for results and let’s see if I grew any at all this year.
