Structure
For about ten years I had some deep issues with structure. When I use the word “Structure”, I’m referring to the way in which a novel or screenplay is laid out, the sequence of events that has to happen for the story to feel complete. In other words - the Hero’s Journey.
I hired editors to help me overcome this major problem, but to no avail. Finally, I happened along a website, yes, I’ll link it. After ten minutes of reading, I closed the website and walked away in frustration. Could it really be that easy, I asked myself. “No way!” There is no way structure can be that easy. I returned to the website and read it again.
And it clicked! Poof - I’m a structure freak! It all makes perfect sense! After years of studying the Hero’s Journey by Campbell and so many others. Purchasing the 9 plot point structure and 138 plot point structure - this guy makes it simple.
So, if you are wondering what in the world is he rambling about - visit Michael Hauge's - Story Master Website. While he mainly discusses screenplay structure, please note that novels have a little more room for artist license than screenplays, but structure is structure and a story is a story.
If you have ever been told your story has “structural issues”, please do yourself a favor and look at the website. It could save you years of rejection and thousands of dollars!
If you know of any other helpful websites for new writers, please send me a link.
